The First Day of school are upon us, some states have already gone back, for my kids it’s tomorrow. I took a break from blogging in August in order to spent the last days of summer break with my girls. Now it’s time to sit behind school buses in traffic and watch for kids dashing across the street while we swerve to avoid hitting them. It’s time for carpooling, homework and because I encourage my kids to get in involved in something “after school activities”
I know for some kids its exciting, they get to wear new clothes, new sneakers, carry new backpacks and see their friends again. But that newness will wear off real quick; however for me it means actually getting to run my errands without interruptions and cleaning up my house. Getting back into a routine is the hardest part.
But here is what I do:
Make a list of what needs to get done in the morning such as making lunch, walking the dog etc. If you are a slow mover in the morning like my kids get up earlier to give yourself more time getting ready.
Plan dinner a day ahead no one has time to worry about dinner after a long day so if you know what you are doing ahead of time you can prep the night before.
Plan a sleep schedule and stick to it. Now for me this is hard, I get the most work done when everyone goes to bed and its quiet and peaceful; however I cannot get going in the morning, so I have to force myself to go to bed.
Worst things first as my husband always says, anything that takes the most time in the morning do it at night. Get the clothes out, pack your bag, find your car keys and put them in a place where you can find them in the morning. Whatever will slow you down in the morning, tackle it the night before and it makes your morning run more smoothly.
And whatever you do make a list write stuff down lets face it we are busy moms and dads and even though we pride ourselves on remembering but the truth is we can forget. Sometime our brains are already on overload, I make two lists “Things to get DONE” and “To Do”
On my things to get done list- are things that I have to do, no exceptions and with kids in the house that list can get long.
on my to do list- are tasks that I need to do, but they are not urgent.
Establish a routine that works for you and ease back into it
